EMBER LGBTQIA+ End-of-Life Guide is an end-of-life guide that was developed and driven by a group of volunteers from the LGBTQIA+ community and allies. It aims to inform and empower LGBTQIA+ people to start thinking about Advance or Future Care Planning for end of life and support Health and Social Care professionals caring for the community at end of life.

Compassion and Pride: Designing Ember, an LGBTQIA+ End-of-Life Guide

At the intersection of compassion and creativity lies Ember: An LGBTQIA+ End-of-Life Guide—a project that exemplifies the transformative power of thoughtful design. This resource was born from heartfelt conversations in “Death Cafés” hosted across Ireland and developed in partnership with the All Ireland Institute of Hospice and Palliative Care (AIIHPC), LGBT Ireland, and the Irish Hospice Foundation. As the designer behind Ember, I had the profound honor of weaving together stories, insights, and aesthetics to create a guide that empowers LGBTQIA+ individuals and equips Health and Social Care professionals with tools for compassionate end-of-life care.

Designing with Intention

The design journey for Ember was guided by a commitment to inclusivity, dignity, and community. At its heart, the project embraced a sex-positive visual language, offering a warm and affirming experience for its readers. Every aspect of the guide was thoughtfully curated to ensure it resonated with the diverse spectrum of identities within the LGBTQIA+ community.

Key Design Features

Custom Illustrations

Each page of Ember is adorned with custom-made illustrations that celebrate diversity across genders, body types, and ethnicities. These visuals foster a sense of comfort and belonging, transforming the guide into a safe space for its readers.

Inclusive Storytelling

The art and design approach tackled sensitive topics with respect and empathy. By addressing complex themes such as death, dying, and bereavement, the visuals served as a bridge to conversations that are often challenging but deeply necessary.

Accessible Layouts

To ensure the guide’s usability across print and digital formats, the layout was meticulously designed for clarity and ease of navigation. The structure supports readers in finding the resources and insights they need without feeling overwhelmed.

The Impact of Ember

Ember was designed to be more than just a guide; it’s a sanctuary of understanding and empowerment. By blending visual storytelling with actionable resources, the guide helps readers navigate end-of-life planning with confidence and care.
